SANTA CRUZ — The city of Santa Cruz Public Works Department is hosting a community open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bay View Elementary School to discuss upcoming improvement projects for the “Bay Corridor” or Bay Street corridor, which spans from West Cliff Drive to UC Santa Cruz.
Staff from the city’s Public Works Department and project consultants will outline planned improvements to the Bay Corridor at the open house and will gather public feedback about the conceptual plans.
The Bay Street corridor improvement projects are intended to connect multi-use pedestrian pathways, parks, Bay View Elementary School and transit lines to make the well-trafficked roadway a more “complete street,” which the city defines on its website as “a roadway designed to accommodate all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, public transit riders, people with disabilities and vehicles. The goal of a complete street project is to create safer, more accessible and more inviting streets that promote active transportation and enhance community connectivity.”
According to the city, the Bay Corridor improvement project will roll out in five phases. The project’s first phase will focus on the span from Escalona Drive to Nobel Drive and will tentatively start this spring. The second phase, slated to begin this summer, will include the stretch of Bay Street from West Cliff Drive to California Street.
